Maxing your workplace retirement plan is a major savings milestone. Whether it is enough depends on the retirement it must fund.

FMB VERDICT: IT DEPENDS The 401(k) maximum is an IRS contribution limit, not a personalized retirement goal. For many workers, reaching the maximum can put retirement on a strong path. For some high earners, late starters or people expecting an expensive retirement, it may still leave a meaningful gap.

The direct answer: Sometimes. Hitting the 2026 maximum shows how much moved through one tax-advantaged account. Retirement readiness still depends on when you started, employer contributions, current assets, investment mix and expected retirement spending.

Maxing a 401(k) is smart. The mistake is treating an IRS ceiling as a personalized funding target.

The myth: maxing out means you are done

“Once I max out my 401(k), I am saving enough for retirement.”

Why it sounds reasonable: The maximum is a clear target. Payroll deductions make it automatic. Employers and financial articles celebrate it as a major milestone. Once you hit the number, it feels as though you have crossed a finish line.

Congress sets the annual limit through the tax code and adjusts it over time. The number does not change with your age, lifestyle, existing balance or retirement date.
